My name is Vanessa. I’m a 50-something white female, born and raised in the southern part of the United States. I have a Masters in English Literature and Composition and made a career as a senior editor in a small publishing house. I wrote my first erotic story as a collection of memories of my life with Jack, my husband and life-long Dom, who passed away from cancer last year. I no longer work full-time but take shorter-term contracts. My viewpoint is shaped by my life; I grew up in a middle-class family in a small city, attended church, and pretty much had a “Norman Rockwell” childhood. I met Jack in my sophomore year in college and we fell in love and became engaged after a few months of dating. Jack determined, due to our fantasy sex life, that I was ready to become a submissive, and took a risky step to prove it to me (you’ll have to read the story). Entering into this new life, I realized there were other people living “outside the mainstream” of American sexual mores. Often they had to hide their true natures to survive and thrive. We did also; but it was easier for us as white college students and later professionals who were (mostly) heterosexual and (mostly) monogamous. We developed a small group of friends who understood and accepted us, some in the D/s lifestyle and some not; and we, in turn, began to welcome, support, and even mentor others who were “outside the mainstream.” I’ve come to realize, although we had many advantages, that we too were members of the LGBTQ+ community as well as its allies. Like others in that community, our love seemed strange and even monstrous to some; but it was love nonetheless.
