Are mobile phones making us more/less socially connected...

... with people that we see on the street? On the one hand there are lots of apps to connect you with people around you, so that could be counted as a definitve plus, BUT I think a lot of people are not using them as most are afraid of crazies using those apps. At the same time what has really been down a lot is that people ask you on the street for directions or whatever. In the past you could also ask someone on the street for the time, without being seen as a thieve who wants to steal their mobile. This was (maybe still is) a really good way to break the ice and start a conversation with somebody, who seems interesting for you.

But maybe I'm completely wrong and missed the point? Anyway, what do you think? Do you use apps to get in touch with people around you and if so, what are your experiences? Do you think smartphones make us more distant from the things happening around us or not really?
