I recently had a conversation with a friend about her thoughts on fan fiction. She is completely against fan fiction. She feels it is wrong to steal a character or place that another author created and use that creation as a basis for your own work. I disagree with her. In my mind, I think it is the highest form of flattery. If I wrote a story about two characters, and my fans loved them enough to then begin writing short stories based on my two characters, I would be thrilled to have that validation. I also find that since I put so much time and energy into my characters, I truly love them and hate to see their stories end. Fan fiction is another way to keep them alive after the book closes.
